How it works

A street address that scans your mail

A virtual mailbox gives you an address at a staffed mail center. When a letter arrives, they photograph the envelope and you choose: open and scan it, forward it, shred it or hold it.

Most mail centers are Commercial Mail Receiving Agencies (CMRAs), so USPS requires a signed PS Form 1583 and two IDs before they can accept your mail. We explain that step and the rest below.

Questions

Common questions

What is a virtual mailbox?

A mailing address at a staffed mail center that receives your mail, photographs each envelope and lets you choose online to scan, forward, shred or hold it.

Is a virtual mailbox address a real street address?

Usually yes: iPostal1 and Anytime Mailbox both describe their addresses as real street addresses. Because most are CMRAs, USPS rules require the box number to appear as "PMB" or "#".

Do I need to fill out USPS Form 1583?

For a CMRA, yes. USPS says customers applying for a private mailbox fill out PS Form 1583 and show two forms of ID, one with a photo (USPS FAQ).
